Marie-Josée Fleury & Morgane Gabet

2021-04-23 @ 12:00 EDT

Please join us on April 23, at 12:00 for a Mental Health and Society Lecture by:

Marie-Josée Fleury, PhD, Researcher, Douglas Research Centre and Professor, Department of Psychiatry, McGill University
Morgane Gabet, PhD, Douglas Research Centre

The talk is entitled, “Research on emergency department (ED) use: overall objectives and study findings on predictors of 30-day outpatient follow-up to ED visits”.

Abstract:

Use of emergency departments (ED), one of the costliest healthcare services, is recognized as a key indicator of quality of care. High ED use often indicates inadequate outpatient services. Patients with mental disorders (MD) are known to contribute substantially to ED overcrowding. Our team conducted a number of studies on ED use, based on clinical-administrative databases and different cohorts. Patients were also recruited and interviewed in 6 ED, including the Douglas Institute, as well as ED clinicians and managers. We measured clinical and sociodemographic predictors of ED use, access to services at discharge, continuity of follow-up care and other health outcomes.

Marie-Josée Fleury, researcher at the Douglas Research Centre, will provide a rapid overview of this research program, drawing on some 15 articles produced over the past few years. Morgane Gabet, PhD(c), will present thesis results from her recently submitted article on predictors of 30-day outpatient follow-up to ED visits among patients diagnosed with mental disorders. Follow-up within 30 days of discharge from ED is a key benchmark for appropriate continuity of care in this vulnerable population. Current knowledge on outpatient follow-up to ED visits, study findings on predictors of access to follow-up care, and recommendations for improving mental health services will be discussed.

Please note that this event will be held by Zoom.
