Science POP 2024 final: results

Novembre 26, 2024

On November 21 and 22, the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal (IRCM) and the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS) presented the Provincial Grand Final of Science Pop, a Quebec competition focused on scientific communication. Held in person at the IRCM, the event gave finalists from 12 Quebec research institutions the opportunity to captivate the audience with their 5-, 2- or 7-minute presentations, aimed at sharing research initiatives or results with the general public.

The 12 participating institutions from across Quebec had organized local science communication events in advance of the event, which led to the selection of finalists in each of the three categories:

  • Outreach Challenge, a 5-minute presentation designed to inform the general public about the research,
  • Media Challenge, a 2-minute presentation accompanied by a press release,
  • Sustainable health Challenge, a 7-minute presentation on how their work supports sustainable health.

The finalists from each institution met last week and took part in three high-level challenges, which helped to select the winners.

In this news item, we introduced you to the three students who had been selected by the VIVA 2024 Awards selection committee:

  • Dominique (Nikki) Lumley (team of Naguib Mechawar) for the Outreach Challenge,
  • Jana Totzek (team of Martin Lepage) for the Media Challenge,
  • Sujata Sinha (team of Bruno Debruille) for the Sustainable health Challenge.

All three brilliantly represented the Douglas Research Centre at the Science Pop finals! Well done to them!

Jana Totzek won 2nd prize, the Jacques Genest award, for the Media challenge! Congratulations!

Congratulations to all the participants and good luck for the rest of their careers in scientific research and communication!
