Team
Serge Beaulieu, MD, PhD, Mario Roy, MD, Abdallah Dallal, MD, Mario Roy, MD, Joseph Thavundayil, MD, Hani Iskandar, MD, Suzane Renaud, MD, Rébecca Sablé, Sybille Saury

Multicentric Study
Lakshmi Yatham, MD (Principal Investigator), Raymond Lam, MD, Kevin Solomons, MD, C.V. Manjunath, MD, Edwin Tam, MD, Hiram Mok, MD, Wetid Pratoomsri, MD

Funding
Canada Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

Objective
The purpose of this study is to determine how long the combination of a mood stabilizer and an atypical antipsychotic should be maintained once the acute manic episode is in remission.

2- Light-Therapy in the Treatment of the Acute Phase of the Bipolar Type II Depression: Double Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study to Establish Efficacy and Safety.

Team
Serge Beaulieu, MD, PhD, Hani Iskandar, MD, Mario Roy, MD, Suzane Renaud, MD, Andrée Daigneault, MD, Jacques Tremblay, MD, Fernando Corbalán, Valérie François, Sybille Saury

Funding
NARSAD Independent Investigator Award

Objective
The goal of this study is to determine the efficacy and safety of light-therapy in the treatment of the depressive phase of bipolar II disorder.

3- Differential diagnosis of bipolar affective disorder and borderline personality disorder: the contribution of affective lability

Team
Suzane Renaud, MD, Serge Beaulieu, MD, PhD, Andrée Daigneault, MD, Jacques Tremblay, MD

Funding
ASTRA ZENECA / DHRC / McGill Research Program in Mood Disorders

Objective
The aim of this pilot research is to ascertain the differences of the affective experience of bipolar affective disorder and borderline personality disorder, thus helping the differential diagnosis of the two disorders.

4- Emotion Regulation in Bipolar Disorder: An fMRI study using a Situational-Focused Strategy

Team
Serge Beaulieu, MD, PhD, Fernando Corbalán (Master candidate), Jorge Armony, PhD, Jens C. Pruessner, PhD, Mario Roy, MD, Suzane Renaud, MD, Andrée Daigneault, MD

Funding
ASTRA ZENECA / DHRC / McGill Research Program in Mood Disorders

Objective
The purpose of this study is to determine whether people suffering from bipolar I disorder have more difficulties than healthy participants to control the impact of negative emotions. This study also examines the possible link between an abnormal modulation of emotions and cortisol levels in saliva, a hormone that is related to the presence of traumatic experience in life.

5- Peripheral Autonomic Responses in the Cognitive Regulation of Negative Emotions in Bipolar I Disorder

Team
Serge Beaulieu, MD, PhD, Fernando Corbalán (Master candidate), Jorge Armony, PhD, Mario Roy, MD, Suzane Renaud, MD, Andrée Daigneault, MD

Funding
ASTRA ZENECA / DHRC / McGill Research Program in Mood Disorders

Objective
The purpose of this study is to assess whether people affected by bipolar I disorder have more difficulties to regulate negative emotions than non-affected ones. We also want to see whether the recording of peripheral physiologic measures is a sensitive marker for the detection of these abnormalities.

6- Light and Ion Therapy to Enhance Medication Efficacy in Nonseasonal Major Depressive Disorder

Team
Serge Beaulieu, MD, PhD, Hani Iskandar, MD, Mario Roy, MD

Multicentric Study
Raymond W. Lam, MD (Principal Investigator), Anthony J. Levitt, MD, Robert D. Levittan, MD, Erin Michalak, PhD, Muray W. Enns, MD, Sagard Parikh, MD, Amy Cheung, MD, Alexis Kiss, PhD, Rachel Morehouse, MD, Rajamannar Ramasubbu, MD, Glenda McQueen, MD

Funding
Canada Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

Objective
The purpose of this study is to investigate the safety, tolerability, and effectiveness of two treatment devices when combined with medication (fluoxetine) during 8 weeks of treatment for Major Depressive Disorder.

7- Antidepressant in the Maintenance Treatment of Bipolar Disorder

Team

Funding
Canada Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

Objective
This study is being conducted to determine the optimal length of time for patients with bipolar depression to be treated with an antidepressant in combination with either a mood stabilizer, an atypical antipsychotic, or with both of them.
