Research Assistant and youth navigator – Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health

Summary of position

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our dynamic team at the Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health (CEYMH), located at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute. Through a combination of innovation in health service delivery and research focused on new interventions, the CEYMH is a hub for transformative change for youth facing a variety of needs – health, social, educational, employment, among others. The Centre focuses not only on research to generate new knowledge, but to directly applying such knowledge in the delivery of youth mental health services and providing training to a new generation of clinicians, researchers, and support workers with expertise by experience.

The project: The incumbent will work with a lively group of individuals in the BLOOM program – a longitudinal research project enriched for help-seeking and non help-seeking youth and families facing adversity who will be followed over at least 5 years to evaluate the course of functioning and pathways to care. This large, multi-level cohort collects rigorous data at the individual, family, and service levels. The aim is to help prevent and better assess onset of mental issues in young people as well as improving access to specialized care when needed.

Work environment: The Research Assistant will be based at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute, a highly specialized and research-intensive teaching institution providing mental health care services to individuals of all ages. It includes the Douglas Research Centre, the second largest mental health research center in Canada. Its vibrant multidisciplinary community of researchers investigate virtually all aspects of mental health, from genes to society. The Douglas forms part of the Montreal West Island Integrated University Health and Social Services Centre (CIUSSS-West Island), which provides health care services to a population of nearly 375,000 inhabitants (Statistics Canada, 2016).

Description of tasks

  • Complete a thorough participant evaluation by following a validated protocol (generally >4hours of a assessments at a time)
  • Communication of results with research and clinical teams (complete training and supervision will be provided)
  • Help clinicians lead groups and interventions for youth and families
  • Work partly with clinical teams and partly with research team
  • Aid in other duties related to the program, including coordination, revision of documentation, organizing events, and developing communication material.
  • Assist in other ongoing research projects at the CEYMH, as needed
  • Report regularly on work progress to team members and project manager

Required qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a health-related field required
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant work experience

Required skills

  • Knowledge of research practices and health care settings
  • Familiarity with psychopathology and psychometric assessments
  • Knowledge of child and adolescent development
  • Strong ability and genuine enthusiasm for working with youth, demonstrated through sensitivity, empathy, active listening, and a commitment to a non-judgmental approach.
  • Flexible with working hours and mobile (ideally owns a car, though alternatives are available)

Required abilities

  • Capacity to work in a young, multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced, result-oriented environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Fluency in both official languages (French is a requirement)
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Legally able to work in Canada

Location of work

Douglas Research Centre, T Pavilion and other clinics of the CIUSSS as well as community (on-site presence required).

Work schedule

  • Minimum 4 days (28 hours) per week
  • 12-month contract, renewable on satisfactory progress
  • Preferred start date: February, 1st 2025
  • Weekends and evenings schedule are expected regularly

Salary

Starting at 23$ an hour - Commensurate with education and experience
