In Memoriam: Dr. Gaston P. Harnois

Remembering Dr. Gaston P. Harnois and his contribution to international mental health collaboration

Dr. Gaston P. Harnois (1933–2026) was a psychiatrist and former Executive Director of the Douglas Hospital whose leadership contributed to the Douglas’ influence in mental health in Quebec and internationally.

We remember Dr. Harnois as a key player who helped advance community psychiatry and contributed to the creation of the Douglas WHO Collaborating Centre for Mental Health. He remained active through the Centre for many years, supporting the sharing of knowledge, training and international collaboration in mental health.

Dr. Gaston P. Harnois left a lasting mark on the Douglas and on the evolution of mental health care in Quebec. We honour his contribution with gratitude and extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones and all those touched by his legacy.
