Congratulations to Dr. Gustavo Turecki!
The University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine has selected Dr. Gustavo Turecki to receive the Margolese prize for his pioneering work that has advanced our understanding of how early life adversity changes the brain to influence suicide and depression. The prize includes a $50,000 award and is among the most prestigious honours bestowed by a Canadian university. The recipient was chosen by an international panel of experts and a UBC committee chaired by Robert McMaster, Executive Associate Dean, Research and Deborah Money, Executive Vice Dean.
On July 16, 2019, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of British Columbia announced that it was awarding Gustavo Turecki, MD, PhD, the prestigious Margolese National Brain Disorders Prize, an honour bestowed upon Canadian physicians or scientists who make outstanding contributions to the treatment, amelioration, or cure of brain disorders. Among other criteria, an important factor considered is "the candidate's impact on policy and practice, forging partnerships with scientists and others to foster brain disorders research and/or to implement discoveries, and cultivating future leaders in the field".
Dr. Turecki was chosen for his remarkable achievements in improving our understanding of how early-life adversity changes the brain to influence suicidal behaviour and depression, as well as in promoting research in the field locally, nationally, and internationally, and in engaging in meaningful dialogue with policy makers and service users.
In addition to being the Scientific Director of the Douglas Research Centre, Dr. Turecki holds a Canada Research Chair in Major Depressive Disorder and Suicide and is the Chair of McGill's Department of Psychiatry. He is also the Founding Director of both the FRQS-funded Quebec Network on Suicide, Mood Disorders, and Related Disorders (RQSHA), and of the McGill Group for Suicide Studies, as well as the Co-director of the Douglas-Bell Canada Brain Bank, the Head of the Depressive Disorders Program, and Chief of the Department of Psychiatry of the Montréal West Island CIUSSS.
Congratulations to Dr. Turecki for this award!
