Giuseppe D’Andrea, a first-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Psychiatry, McGill University is awarded the prestigious 2025 Tomlinson Doctoral Fellowship.
Giuseppe holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Naples – Federico II and completed his residency in Psychiatry at the University of Bologna – Alma Mater Studiorum. During his clinical training, Giuseppe cultivated a deep interest in research, contributing to the multi-national EU-GEI study on environmental and genetic factors in first-episode psychosis under the mentorship of leading experts in the field. He later worked as a general psychiatrist at the Community Mental Health Centre of Sassuolo, Modena, before relocating to Montreal to pursue a research fellowship at the Douglas Mental Health Research Institute and the Research Center of Universite de Montreal (CRCHUM). There, he worked under the supervision of Professors Srividya Iyer, Amal Abdel-Baki, and Jai Shah, focusing on early psychosis and youth mental health. He has authored several publications in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals and presented his work at major conferences such as the Schizophrenia International Research Society (SIRS) and the International Association for Youth Mental Health. Earlier this year, he was awarded a $25,000 scholarship from the Canadian Consortium for Early Intervention in Psychosis, in partnership with the Schizophrenia Society of Canada Foundation.
Giuseppe’s PhD will explore the social determinants of psychosis through the lenses of intersectionality, complex systems modeling, and the social exposome framework. Using geospatial analyses and machine learning techniques, he aims to uncover patterns of vulnerability and resilience to severe mental health challenges, with the goal of informing policies and services that address the needs of diverse communities.
