2025 Marie Giguère Travel Awards

Thanks to the generous support from Ms. Marie Giguère, Ad. E., past Vice-President of the Douglas Mental Health University Institute Foundation, awards worth up to $500 are available to support travel and attendance for graduate students (MSc and PhD candidates) presenting their work at a national or international scientific conference.

2025 Marie Giguère Travel Awards

Details of the competition

  • Eligible meetings for the current competition are national or international in-person conferences, taking place between January 1 and December 31, 2025.
  • Eight awards will be allocated in the current competition, two for each of the four research divisions of the Douglas Research Centre:
    • Clinical Research
    • Mental Health and Society
    • Basic Neuroscience
    • Human Neuroscience
Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, you must:

  • Be registered in a graduate-level program (i.e., Master’s, Doctoral) in an accredited university.
  • Be conducting your thesis work under the supervision of a principal investigator who is a member of the Douglas Research Centre.
  • Be doing either an oral or a poster presentation.
  • There are no restrictions on the proposed conference, as long as it is a national or international conference, the conference is in-person, and it is related to your thesis research area.
  • The conference must occur in the date ranges indicated above. The award cannot be used for a different meeting than the one described in the application.

Only expenses related specifically to the participation in the conference are eligible (e.g., travel, housing, poster production expenses; registration fees). The award will amount to the total of the expenses supported by receipts, up to a maximum of $500.

Disbursement

Awardees will receive the award, up to a maximal value of $500, after they have submitted:

  • The confirmation of conference registration or travel to the conference;
  • The receipts for the expenses to be reimbursed for with the award;
  • The confirmation from conference organizers that your presentation abstract has been accepted.

Late submissions, incomplete forms or submissions that do not fulfill the above criteria will NOT be considered.

Roger J. Paiement Outreach Award 2025

Thanks to the generous support from Ms. Danielle T. Paiement, an award worth up to $1,000 is available to support the participation of graduate students (MSc and PhD candidates), postdoctoral fellows or residents at an international scientific conference to present their research work in the field of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, memory disorders or aging.

Roger J. Paiement Outreach Award 2025

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, you must:

  • Be registered in a graduate-level program (i.e., Master’s, Doctoral) in an accredited university or a postdoctoral fellow or a resident in Psychiatry presently conducting research.
  • Be conducting your research work under the supervision of a principal investigator who is a member of the Douglas Research Centre.
  • Be presenting either an oral or a poster presentation at the conference for which support is requested, on a topic related to the focus of this award (Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, memory disorders or aging).
  • There are no restrictions on the proposed conference, as long as it is a national or international conference, and that it is related to your thesis research area.
  • The conference must occur between January 1 and December 31, 2025. The award cannot be used for a different meeting than the one described in the application.

Marilyn Meikle Award for Research in Mental Health

Thanks to generous gifts from Marilyn Meikle, the Douglas Research Centre and the Douglas Foundation are happy to announce this year’s competition of the Marilyn Meikle Award to recognize the outstanding work of a student (undergraduate, Masters or PhD),  a postdoctoral fellow or a resident who demonstrates an interest to improve knowledge about causes or treatment of depression and/or bipolar disorder by conducting or contributing to a research project at the Douglas Institute.

Marilyn Meikle Award for Research in Mental Health

 

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, the applicants must:

  • Be an undergraduate student, Master’s student, Ph.D. student, resident in Psychiatry (research stream) or a postdoctoral fellow conducting or contributing to a research project in mental health at the Douglas Institute.
  • Be preferably working on a research project on depression and/or bipolar disorder.
  • Be conducting or contributing their research under the primary supervision of a principal investigator who is a member of the Douglas Mental Health University Institute.
  • Show an excellent track record of past accomplishments as well as the demonstrated potential to contribute new research findings toward the objectives of this award (as described above).

Value

One prize of $1,000. Exceptionally, the award may be awarded to a group of recipients, but the total amount available for this award will not exceed $ 1,000.

Application procedure

The applicant should submit the following documents as a single PDF document:

  • A curriculum vitae.
  • A short explanation of why the applicant thinks he/she/they is/are the best candidate to receive this award (max 200 words).
  • A description of the applicant’s research work and its significance to the goal of the award as described above (max 500 words).
  • A short letter of recommendation by the Douglas research supervisor (this letter can either be integrated by the applicant in the application file or sent directly by the supervisor to Colleen Carter, carter@douglas.mcgill.ca).

Award announcement

Candidates will be notified of the competition’s results in May 2025. The winner is expected to attend the Douglas Research Day on June 19, 2025.
