2026 World Alzheimer’s Day

Today we are marking World Alzheimer’s Day.

More than 750,000 Canadians are affected by Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. At the Douglas, numerous teams are working to gain a better understanding of this disease with the aim of treating it more effectively or even preventing it.

One of the strengths of these research programmes is the participation of large numbers of people in cohorts comprising individuals at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or who are already showing symptoms of dementia.

Recently, the StoP – Alzheimer’s programme celebrated the 1,000th participant in its “PREVENT Alzheimer’s disease” cohort.

Dr. Villeneuve, the programme lead, emphasises that:

“What touches me most is the care our team has taken in supporting participants over so many years, as well as the commitment and trust that participants show in us and place in our work. After 15 years together, the follow-up visits sometimes feel like family gatherings.”

We would like to take this opportunity to thank not only the teams working hard to shed light on this disease, but also our financial partners, and above all the participants who give up their time to make these activities possible.

“Dementia affects everyone differently and symptoms can vary by person and by day. Many people living with dementia continue to make meaningful contributions to their families, workplaces and communities.”

– The Honourable Marjorie Michel, P.C., M.P.
