In a study published in the journal eBioMedicine, Dr. Patricia Silveira reveals a major breakthrough in understanding the biological mechanisms of depression.

His team identified a specific gene activity pattern linked to synaptic function which, when combined with childhood trauma, significantly increases the risk of depression in women. This discovery could help identify those most at risk so that earlier intervention can prevent depression.

« We know childhood abuse increases the risk of depression at the population level, but at the individual level it’s much harder to predict who will actually develop the disorder. Our findings point to a biological mechanism that may help explain who is more at risk, at least in women. »
