Mental-health services must understand how loneliness, shame, rejection, digital alienation and certain ideologies converge in vulnerable young men.

In an opinion piece jointly published today in The Monreal Gazette and Le Devoir, Dr. Anthony Gifuni shares his thoughts on the recent violent events in Montreal and the source of so-called “incel” anger.

“As a psychiatrist who works with young adults in distress, I see a question emerge: Was he mentally ill? The question is legitimate, but insufficient. It becomes dangerous when it conflates psychological suffering, violent ideology and moral responsibility.“
