Field hockey legend Henri Richard died of Alzheimer’s disease in 2020. After his death, his son Denis asked the Douglas Mental Health University Institute to study his brain.

The diagnosis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) he received in 2023 explains some of Henri Richard’s behaviours, such as aggressiveness and memory problems.
Today, Denis Richard is involved in research and campaigns to raise awareness of the risks of repeated blows to the head in sport.Denis Richard s’engage aujourd’hui dans la recherche et milite pour la sensibilisation aux risques des coups répétés à la tête dans le sport.

In my head, I thought he was like that, but after receiving the result, it made us understand several behaviors he had at the time that we didn’t think could have had an impact. The periods when he was more aggressive, I think, are related to that.
