This study, led by Drs. Gustavo Turecki, Corina Nagy, and their collaborator Dr. Yue Li analyzed post-mortem brain tissue from individuals suffering from depression. For the first time, researchers identified two specific types of altered cells: certain neurons involved in mood and stress regulation, and a subtype of microglia involved in inflammation.

This is the first time we’ve been able to identify what specific brain cell types are affected in depression by mapping gene activity together with mechanisms that regulate the DNA code. It gives us a much clearer picture of where disruptions are happening, and which cells are involved.

– Dr. Gustavo Turecki

Published in Nature Genetics, the study opens the door to new approaches for understanding and treating depression.
