Dr. Geoffroy is a leading expert in two areas: (1) epidemiology, where she examines the modifiable determinants of youth suicide through a developmental perspective, leveraging large-scale longitudinal cohorts; and (2) intervention, where she designs, tests, and disseminates evidence-based interventions for mental health promotion and suicide prevention tailored to young people. Her innovative research relies on diverse and rigorous methodologies, including longitudinal cohort studies, randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, qualitative research, and collaboration with partners including youth with lived experience.

Dr. Marie-Claude Geoffroy is an Associate Professor in Psychiatry and an Associate Member in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health at McGill University and the Douglas Mental Health University Institute, and a licensed child and adolescent psychologist. She holds a Canada Research Chair in Youth Suicide Prevention (Tier 2).

She has authored over 150 peer-reviewed articles, including many in leading journals such as JAMA Network Open, JAMA Psychiatry, Lancet Psychiatry, Canadian Medical Association Journal, and Science of the Total Environment. As a principal investigator, Dr. Geoffroy has been awarded several research grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the Fonds de Recherche du Québec, and philanthropic funders such as the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention = and Manulife.

Dr. Geoffroy founded and directs the Papageno Research Team on Suicide Prevention, a collaboration of over 10 investigators, youth, and partners dedicated to producing knowledge that informs suicide prevention and raises hope. She also directs McGill Unit of the Groupe de recherche sur l’inadaptation psychosociale chez l’enfant and the mental health research axis of the Observatoire pour la santé et l’éducation des enfants.

In recognition of her achievements, Dr. Geoffroy was a recipient of the McGill Principal’s Prize for Outstanding Emerging Researchers in 2022. She was also elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 2023. Frequently consulted by governmental and non-governmental organizations, she provides expertise on suicide prevention in Quebec, Canada, and internationally.

She is dedicated to disseminating accredited training programs grounded in science, equipping professionals with best practices in suicide prevention while incorporating and respecting the voices of individuals with lived experience. Actively engaged in knowledge mobilization, she has disseminated lay articles, infographics, videos, and, most recently, a documentary on nature-based interventions in schools.
