Dr Patricia Pelufo Silveira – Experts: International Day of Women and Girls in Science

In anticipation of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Dr. Patricia Pelufo SIlveira was interviewed by McGill’s Newsroom:

“I started medical school at 17. My inaugural physiology class was given by Prof. Maria Marques, who had retired recently. She told us about her work with Profs. Riet Correa and Bernardo A. Houssay. Their collective discoveries about insulin secretion and signaling were pivotal for the understanding of hormonal feedback control, central to all aspects of modern endocrinology. Prof. Marques was so emotional and so passionate during her talk, fascinating me with the idea of having a job where I could be creative, innovative, and passionate. Not long after, I started working with Prof. Carla Dalmaz as an assistant. Prof Dalmaz is an example of an excellent scientist, extremely kind colleague, and dedicated mother. I stayed in her lab until the end of my PhD before moving to Canada. I like to think that I inherited her mentoring skills and her curiosity, and her ability to integrate personal and professional aspects in a very healthy way.” 

Patricia Pelufo Silveira is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and a researcher at the Douglas Research Centre. Her areas of focus include child behaviour, eating behavior, functional genomics and neurodevelopment.

En prévision de la Journée internationale des femmes et des filles de science, la Dre Patricia Pelufo Silveira a été interviewée par la salle de presse de McGill :

“J’ai commencé mes études de médecine à 17 ans. Mon premier cours de physiologie a été donné par la professeure Maria Marques, qui avait pris sa retraite récemment. Elle nous a parlé de son travail avec les professeurs Riet Correa et Bernardo A. Houssay. Riet Correa et Bernardo A. Houssay. Leurs découvertes collectives sur la sécrétion et la signalisation de l’insuline ont été déterminantes pour la compréhension du rétrocontrôle hormonal, qui est au cœur de tous les aspects de l’endocrinologie moderne. Le professeur Marques était si émotif et si passionné pendant son exposé qu’il m’a fasciné à l’idée d’avoir un travail où je pourrais être créatif, innovant et passionné. Peu de temps après, j’ai commencé à travailler avec la professeure Carla Dalmaz en tant qu’assistante. La professeure Dalmaz est un exemple d’excellente scientifique, de collègue extrêmement gentille et de mère dévouée. Je suis restée dans son laboratoire jusqu’à la fin de mon doctorat avant de déménager au Canada. J’aime penser que j’ai hérité de ses qualités de mentor, de sa curiosité et de sa capacité à intégrer les aspects personnels et professionnels d’une manière très saine”.

Patricia Pelufo Silveira est professeure agrégée au Département de psychiatrie et chercheuse au Centre de recherche du Douglas. Ses domaines de prédilection sont le comportement de l’enfant, le comportement alimentaire, la génomique fonctionnelle et le neurodéveloppement.
