Our research team aims to advance knowledge and improve the care related to child suicide, while studying certain key ethical challenges that arise in child mental health and advancing research methodologies with children. As the receivers of care, children are ideally placed to inform on their needs, goals and experiences. They represent an untapped source of valuable knowledge to improve suicide prevention and child mental health care. Our work is rooted in pragmatic and hermeneutic theories and philosophies, which stress the importance of participation, empowerment, experience, context, and meaning. Current projects include: (1) Ethically and meaningfully engaging children in research (funded: SSHRC Insight Development Grant); (2) Improving suicide prevention care with children within mental health services (funded: CIHR early career investigator – maternal, child and youth health); (3) Partnering with children to improve mental health services and practices; and (4) Everyday ethics of suicide and medical-aid-in-dying (pilot funded: FRQS bi-network funding – Réseau québécois de recherche en soins palliatifs et de fin de vie and Réseau québécois sur le suicide, les troubles de l’humeur et les troubles associés)
Marjorie Montreuil is assistant professor at McGill’s Ingram School of Nursing. She has clinical experience as a mental health nurse and clinical nurse specialist, both at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute. She completed a doctoral degree in nursing at McGill University in child mental health, for which she received competitive funding from the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé, the Canadian Nurses Foundation and the Association québécoise des infirmières et infirmiers en santé mentale. She then pursued postdoctoral training in pragmatic health ethics at the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal, where she further advanced participatory research approaches and concept analysis strategies.
