FMRI-based functional changes in at-risk stages for Alzheimer’s disease
The talk focuses on findings of altered fMRI BOLD activation during task fMRI in preclinical and at-risk stages for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This includes findings of increased fMRI task activity in hippocampus and posterior-midline regions in cognitively older adults with early AD pathology and patients with subjective cognitive impairment. It has been suggested that fMRI-based activity follows a non-linear pattern with increased activity in the presence of early AD pathology and mild cognitive deficits, followed by decreased activity with clinical progression and more advanced AD pathology. However, the underlying mechanisms of early fMRI “hyperactivation” are still unclear.
