Unravelling brain dysconnectivity with cross-species fMRI
Aberrant functional connectivity is a hallmark of brain connectopathy in multiple developmental and neurological disorders. However, the origin and significance of this phenomenon remain undetermined.
Over the past decade, my laboratory has established methods to map and causally manipulate resting-state fMRI connectivity in the mouse. This novel research platform offers the opportunity to uncover the determinants of functional dysconnectivity in brain disorders, whether they are genetic mutations, environmental risk factors, or specific cellular and circuit dysfunctions.
I my talk I will illustrate recent examples of the application of this research platform to the investigation of functional connectopathy in autism. Special emphasis will be placed on the possibility of effectively extrapolating and translating fMRI findings from mouse to human, and on the use of rodent studies to reconcile conflicting findings in human neuroimaging research of autism.
Cross-species fMRI is poised to advance our understanding of the effectors and determinants of human functional dysconnectivity.
