Title

Whole brain examination of the impact of alpha-synuclein spreading on brain structure and behavioural symptom progression in a mouse model of Parkinson’s Disease

Abstract

Recent studies suggest the alpha-synuclein protein in Lewy bodies may spread in a prion-like manner, causing motor and cognitive problems and contributing to Parkinson’s disease (PD)  progression. Stephanie will present her projects investigating alpha-synuclein spreading in a mouse model of PD, using MRI for whole brain examination, and combining data across different scales to better understand disease progression (in terms of symptomatology and cellular pathology). The goal of her work is to predict disease progression and provide a platform for testing treatments through the  creation of a bio-computational model for investigating protein propagation, would can also allow for the investigation of any disease in which protein propagation is a pathogenic factor, such as with beta-amyloid and tau in Alzheimer’s disease or with TDP-43 in ALS and FTD.
