Rising trends in opioid prescription, opioid use and opioid overdose deaths have been increasingly documented in the United States and Canada during the past twenty years. In response to what is referred to as “the opioid crisis,” Michel Perreault’s team has been leading several research projects to address the many facets of this issue.
This seminar will be moderated by Michel Perreault. Léonie Archambault will present a study on opioid users’ profiles and service needs. Next, Jennifer Cohen will describe a study on access to mental health services for this population. Niamh Power will then address obstacles and facilitators to opioid agonist treatment access and retention. Léonie Archambault will discuss novel treatment avenues for patients who do not respond to traditional opioid agonist treatments. Caroline Robitaille will provide a pharmacist’s perspective on the issue, and finally, Marie-Anne Ferlatte will describe a peer-led initiative for overdose death prevention. Concluding remarks by Michel Perreault will touch on research challenges arising in the field of opioid use disorders.
