Laurence Roy, PhD

Please join us on January 27, at 10:30 am in room E-3517, Perry Pavilion, to hear a presentation by Laurence Roy, PhD, entitled “Bringing research and community organizations together: Lessons learned from community-based to community-led projects.” Dr. Roy is Assistant Professor in the School of Physical & Occupational Therapy at McGill, and regular researcher at the Douglas Research Centre.Bio: I am a Professor in the School of Physical and Occupational Therapy at McGill University, and a regular researcher at the Douglas Research Centre. My work consists of projects on psychosocial rehabilitation, community integration, and occupational engagement of youth and adults who live with mental illness and experience psychosocial challenges, particularly in the areas of housing, homelessness, and justice involvement. I have a particular interest in building and documenting participatory partnerships where knowledge can be exchanged and co-constructed.
Aims of the workshop: (1) To introduce participants to various forms of community involvement in mental health research, from community engagement to community control; (2) To engage in a collective discussion on experiences, perceived value, and potential barriers to community-based/-led mental health research; and (3) To share strategies to enhance community involvement in mental health research.
Suggested workshop plan:
10:30-10:45: Presentation on different forms of mental health research with communities and particularly community organizations, with examples from my own research and an overview of the literature
10:45-11:15: Small group (depending on the size of the audience) discussion on experiences of working with community organizations, perceived value, barriers, and potential strategies to enhance the experiences of community organization in research.
11:15-11:30: Plenary discussion and Q & A
