Title:  Obesity and brain health: an overview of the possible mechanisms underlying this relationship

Abstract: Industrial societies are experiencing what demographers call the “longevity revolution”: in the last century, life expectancy has increased more than 30 years. However, these increases in lifespan have not been matched with increases in healthspan, or the time that we spend with an absence of frailty and disabilities. This creates a pressing need to maintain general health (and specially brain health) across the lifespan. One modifiable risk factor for brain health is abdominal obesity. Obesity confers a higher risk of cerebrovascular diseases, dementia, and mild cognitive impairment in elderly populations. In the presentation, I will outline possible mechanisms underlying the relationship between abdominal obesity and brain health and I will suggest future research directions.
