Using the referential communication paradigm to study language production in schizophrenia during a joint task performed with an interaction partner
Speaker Biography
Amélie Achim is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurosciences, Faculty of Medicine, Université Laval. She is a researcher at VITAM in the Sustainable Health Promotion, Prevention and Protection division, as well as at the CERVO Research Center, Clinical and Cognitive Neuroscience Axis.
Pre Amélie Achim studies social cognition, social interactions and mental health. Social cognition refers to the cognitive processes that enable us to understand others, their thoughts, intentions and emotions, and that guide our social interactions. Impaired social cognition is linked to problems of adaptation and integration in people with schizophrenia, as well as other mental health problems such as social anxiety and personality disorders. A better understanding of the mechanisms underlying social cognition aims to improve the effectiveness of interventions with these people, and mitigate their impact on daily life.
Pre Achim’s team develops and uses behavioral tests of social cognition, as well as interactive tests of verbal communication. These tests are sometimes combined with analysis of the brain using functional neuroimaging (fMRI) to determine which brain regions are involved and necessary to perform these tasks.
