TREAT-BD: Sleep and Bipolar Disorder
We are interested in investigating sleep patterns in those with bipolar disorder to better identify bipolar subtypes with the goal of improving treatment outcomes. The study is one year long, with regular visits throughout the year.
Principal Investigator
Dr. Serge BeaulieuDescription of study
The study aims to understand the evolution and progression of bipolar disorder by assessing changes in numerous clinical variables (including symptoms, functioning, cognition), as well as sleep patterns and heart rate variability over time. Participants will undergo a variety of questionnaires and cognitive tests to measure their emotional, physical and cognitive wellbeing. Participants will also be given actigraphy devices and a smart-shirt which measures their physiological symptoms and sleep quality.
Financial compensation
Yes
Functioning
Participants will first be contacted by phone to evaluate their possible eligibility for the study. Potentially eligible participants will be invited to an in-person screening visit. Following this, the baseline visit will take place, where we will conduct clinical interviews, questionnaires, and cognitive tests. We will give you the devices (the actigraphy watch and shirt) to take home. Over the next two weeks, you will wear the actigraphy device, while the shirt will only be worn for 3 periods of 24 hours. The devices will then be returned to our team and follow-up questionnaire will be done. We will repeat this process 6 months later, and again 1 year later. We will also meet in-between these visits, at 3 months and 9 months, to follow-up on how your life is going. Overall, we will meet once every 3 months for a total of 9 times.
Benefits
By participating, you will significantly contribute to the advancement of research in bipolar disorder.
