Biography

Dr. Rémi Quirion is an internationally recognized neuroscientist and mental health researcher whose leadership has had a lasting impact on science, research, and public policy in Quebec, Canada, and beyond.

As Scientific Director of the Douglas Research Centre from 1996 to 2011, he played a key role in shaping the institution and championing the vital contribution of students, inspiring the creation of an excellence award honoring outstanding master’s students. Serving as Quebec’s first Chief Scientist from 2011 to 2026 and currently President of the International Network for Government Science Advice, he has been a strong advocate for interdisciplinary research, science diplomacy, and evidence-informed policymaking, particularly within the Francophonie and Global South.

With more than 750 scientific publications, he is among the world’s most cited neuroscientists and has held numerous leadership roles, including at McGill University and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

His distinguished career has earned many honours, including Officer of the Order of Canada, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and Member of the Ordre national du Québec. Reflecting on his legacy, Dr. Quirion hopes to inspire others to see science as both challenging and deeply rewarding, driven by the excitement of discovery and the opportunity to expand human knowledge.
