3rd Prize: Astrocytes contacting blood vessels in the human brain
Description and scientific context:
This micrograph shows astrocytes directly contacting blood vessels in the human caudate nucleus. In this experiment, I performed Sholl analyses on 3D tracings of vimentin-immunoreactive astrocytes to describe the morphometric properties of astrocytes in this brain region. This work is part of a larger project aimed at realizing the first regional characterisation of human astrocytes, with the view of understanding the diverse morphology, distribution and gene expression of human astrocytes, and the astrocytic alterations that occur in depression.

Brightfield microscopy on an Olympus BX51TF, 20x magnification, tracing on Neurolucida software (MBF Bioscience).
